HomeState is a Tex-Mex restaurant
in Highland Park, Los Angeles.
The following is a proposal for the
redesign of their outdoor patio.

Process began with researching about the restaurant's attributes and demographics to better understand what would be appropriate for the space:

Concept
As Highland Park is a continually changing neighborhood, it was important that the patio would help in establishing HomeState as a permanent resident.
The concept for this proposal was to create a space that could be enjoyed by people in every life stage - from children, to young couples, to families.

Field Condition Sketches
(1) Differing heights allows for flexible seating positions and adaptable table/seating arrangements
(2) Layout accomodates both small and large groups
(2) Canopy imitates layering pattern while casting different shadows
(3) Curvature maintains HomeState's playful nature
(3) Rounded edges create greater comfort & safer for young children
(4) Open space to create an environment that is conducive to movement
Open Space
Allows both children to run around freely & parents
to keep an eye on them.
Different Levels
Allows people to take different seating positions that's comfortable for their group size.
Activities Area
A recreational space that both families with active children & young adults can enjoy.
Transformable
At night, the atmosphere changes to attract the more young adult crowd.
Entertainment
The stage is available if the restaurant wants to host performances or special events.
Lighting
For a more mature ambiance, the space is kept dim while light is provided underneath the steps to help with navigating the space.
